It’s official, because they said it: Opel Calibra (known as Vauxhall Calibra in UK) returns! No word on when it will return, but Nick Reilly, GM’s European President, said that the car is in development, and it will resemble strikingly with the 2007 Opel Gran Turismo Concept presented in Geneva.
That means, amongst other things, that the new Calibra will have Insignia’s platform, with adjustments to the suspensions, steering and wheels that will allow a more sporty feeling (keep in mind that Opel’s platforms are somehow muting the power of their engines, pretty all cars having big numbers in PS (HP), but only under-average accelerations and dynamics.
The new Calibra will be a 2+2 with a penchant for sportiness, and if it will look at least as handsome as the Opel GTC, then we’ll have a winner. It’s interesting to now that the new car will use the most powerful engines in Opel’s lineup, and we are especially looking forward to the new Calibra OPC 4×4 putting on display the fabulous 2.8 litre V6 turbo engine that offers 325PS (321HP) and a staggering 435Nm maximum torque.
Of course, we will have also a sporty interior, with a three-spoke sport wheel, seats and everyting.
Keep your eyes fixed to the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March 2011, perhaps you’ll see a new concept heralding the future Calibra, which is expected to appear in final form at the beginning of 2012.

It looks like fun! I’d rather hope the front will be more aerodynamic though, because Insignia is not as smooth a ride as you would think.
I’d love to travel with the new Calibra on winding roads, that’s for sure!
